Really nice restaurant in the basement of the casino, superb value meals with a drink on arrival, 3 courses and a £5 gaming chip for £17.50. Menu only changes every 2 months so regular visits could be a bit repetitive. A & S Leisure own the Napoleons Casino and Restaurant Chain as well as a sports stadium, greyhound racing track and an Indian restaurant. The successful greyhound race stadium, next door to Napoleons Owlerton Casino holds 260 meetings a year on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. It attracts about 300,000 customers a year. Napoleons Manchester will also host Mahjong and Poker. Napoleons Casino & Restaurant is open now at 57 Portland Street. Current opening hours are 5am until 10pm, with last orders in the restaurant at 8.30pm due to current government restrictions in place. Face coverings must be worn unless eating or drinking.
With a show-stopping, sumptuous interior and luxury detailing throughout, the £8m fit out of the new Napoleons Casino and Restaurant in Manchester has just been completed.
The 1,450m2 Portland Street venue for A&S Leisure, has been designed by Chapman Taylor’s Manchester studio, who also acted as architects and contract administrators for scheme. Fit out contractors were ISG Contracts.
Due to open in the autumn, the new 24-hour casino will present a range of gaming tables, including American Roulette, Blackjack, Three Card Poker and Punto Banco, plus the latest, market leading slot machines and electronic roulette, both of which will be available on a heated, covered outdoor smoking terrace. The venue will also host Mahjong and Poker, while complementary Valet Parking will be provided for customers in the evening.
In addition, the casino will boast a luxurious private dining room, with a stunning restaurant that will overlook the gaming area. The very striking cocktail bar will undoubtedly be one of the venue’s main focal points.
The casino occupies part of a newly constructed hotel, which has an additional hotel to one side, with the majority of the casino being at basement level.
Peter Hirsch, senior architect of Chapman Taylor said: “The venue is designed to offer a complete evening out – from gambling to drinking and dining, so we had to maximise all of the available space. All of the interior finishes are to a high standard giving an air of quality traditional elements, combined with modern design. Some of the light fittings, for example are quite unique and interesting, including feature, track and LED pendants. The striking three dimensional illuminated signage throughout the casino is also bespoke.
The ground level wooden-floored reception area is complemented by high quality wallpapers and bespoke timber wall panelling and is designed to create a ‘moody’ ambience. A glazed screen then leads to the remainder of the ground floor, where the upper gaming area is located up several steps, together with a platform lift. The upper gaming area, which features bespoke timber wall panelling interspersed with brass insets, looks out onto a roofed open sided external courtyard. The courtyard is bounded by glazed fins and complete with gaming tables and seating.
An elegant timber panelled staircase with brass handrail leads down to the lower basement main gaming floor area. Halfway down the staircase is a mezzanine with views over the gaming floor.

Each of the gaming tables is overhung by a large pendant light, creating an intimate space. The ceiling features black tiles in a gold grid with subtle curved elements. Walls are a combination of painted and timber panelled, with suspended chain links in some areas.

Within the bar area is a bespoke semi-circular bar with a timber fin feature suspended above, and a mixture of free standing and circular bench seating. A restaurant area and VIP dining space is located to one side of the bar, with a full catering kitchen complete with stainless steel appliances to the rear of the space.
The project also included the creation of full staff facilities including a lounge, kitchen, toilets and changing areas, as well as plant and storage areas.
The casino is served by two lifts – one for guests and another for back of house use.
Peter Hirsch commented, “The main challenge of the scheme was creating a highly serviced area within an existing shell, which required careful co-ordination of the mechanical and electrical services installation. We also continued working during lockdown with a limited number of people on site, and it was very difficult to obtain supplies of materials at that time. In addition, we had to make sure that the building was insulated acoustically, since there is a hotel above.”
The development should bring 120 new jobs to the city, and will operate with full COVID19 compliance.
Peter Hirsch concluded: “We had a good team on site with a good, open working relationship which has helped enormously with the project. Also the quality of workmanship was high – in line with the superior quality of materials used. We did not want to cut corners, and adhered as closely as possible to our original concept design – which I think that this has been achieved. The client has also said that they are pleased with the result.”
